Trip Planning
Our upcoming trip required a lot of trip planning and below is the route we have decided on. A lot of preplanning will ensure a smooth adventure.
Typically, my blogs focus on product reviews and race reports, but now I am switching it up a little and adding a blog series of an upcoming adventure. This adventure has had a lot of background preplanning all done by my sweetie Sara. Thus, this blog post is to help you prepare for your upcoming trip and some essentials to include in your trip planning.
Picture this: You’re jetting off from the home to the stunning shores of Croatia and the fairy-tale landscapes of Slovenia, where turquoise Adriatic waves crash against ancient walls, emerald lakes reflect snow-capped Alps, and every twisty road promises a new “wow” moment. This duo of destinations isn’t just a trip, it’s an epic adventure blending sun-soaked beaches, historic gems, and mouthwatering eats that’ll have you pinching yourself.
We will be hiking through Plitvice’s cascading waterfalls in Croatia and rowing across Lake Bled’s mirror-like waters in Slovenia, these memories will outshine any Instagram feed. But before you pack your bags and chase this bliss, let’s dive into smart trip planning for Croatia and Slovenia. With the right flights and route, the journey from the US will be seamless, setting the stage for non-stop thrills. Trust me, with quite a bit of prep in trip planning, your adventure to Croatia and Slovenia is destined to be amazing!
Flights
Kicking off with flights in your trip planning: Selecting the perfect air route from the USA to Croatia and Slovenia can make or break your excitement levels. For Croatia, you’re in luck with seasonal direct options—United Airlines runs daily non-stops from Newark (EWR) to Dubrovnik (DBV) from May through September 2025, making it a breeze to dive straight into those Game of Thrones vibes.
If a direct flight isn’t really an option from your origin in your trip planning or you’re eyeing other spots like Zagreb or Split in Croatia, hop via major European hubs: Lufthansa through Frankfurt or Munich, Air France via Paris, or KLM from Amsterdam often snag deals around $691 round-trip in off-peak November (this is what we found the best deal on). Pro tip: Use sites like Skyscanner or Kayak to compare—prices can dip as low as $361 for flexible dates and booking early locks in those sweet fares (we flew mid-week to get lower prices). From cities like New York, Los Angeles, or Chicago, aim for connections that minimize layovers to keep your energy high for the adventure ahead in Croatia.
Now, for Slovenia in your trip planning, direct flights from the USA aren’t as common, so plan for a hop through Europe. Ljubljana (LJU) is the main gateway, with affordable options like Lufthansa from Boston starting at $505 in November 2025. Other solid picks include Air France deals from $614 round-trip, routing through Paris for a quick croissant stopover. To maximize your trip planning for Croatia and Slovenia, consider flying into one country and out of the other—say, into Zagreb (Croatia) and home from Ljubljana (Slovenia)—to avoid backtracking and squeeze in more magic. Tools like Google Flights or Booking.com can help scout multi-city itineraries, often saving time and bucks while promising smoother sails.
Once you’re on the ground, trip planning your route turns this journey to Croatia and Slovenia into a choose-your-own-adventure masterpiece. Croatia and Slovenia are neighbors, just a short 1-2 hour drive or train ride apart, making them perfect for a combined jaunt. A top itinerary in your trip planning? Fly into Zagreb, Croatia’s vibrant capital, for a day of cafe-hopping and history. Then, rent a car or hop a bus south to the jaw-dropping Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia for turquoise trails and waterfalls that’ll make you feel like you’ve stepped into a fantasy novel.
We decided to make our way to Slovenia then finish the trip through Croatia. The main reason for traveling to this part of the world is to get a glimpse of Sara’s past, since this is where some of her ancestors came from. This trip will allow us to do some genealogy but also explore other parts of these two countries. This will be our first time traveling to Europe, but not our first time trip planning.
Some other options for trip planning are to head west to the Istrian coast like Rovinj in Croatia for seafood feasts or crossing into Slovenia’s Piran for seaside charm. Continue north to Lake Bled’s iconic island church and castle in Slovenia, then wrap up in Ljubljana with its dragon bridges and lively markets.
Travel between Croatia and Slovenia is a cinch: Trains connect Zagreb to Ljubljana in about 2 hours, buses run frequently, or drive for scenic flexibility—think rolling hills and vineyard stops. For a 10–14-day trip planning adventure, this loop lets you hit highlights in Croatia and Slovenia without rushing, promising epic hikes, wine tastings, and beach days. Whether you are road-tripping or using public transport, the short distances mean more time adventuring and less time in transit—your dreams of Croatia and Slovenia are about to level up!
For our trip planning, we decided to rent a car from Zagreb, Croatia. This will be our main mode of transportation, along with some ferry rides to get to and from some island adventures. We will also be taking a few bike rides, but these are just intermediate trips. For more details about the adventure make sure to follow along on our Slovenia Croatia Trip 2025.
