Silca Seat Roll

The Silca Seat Roll Asymmetrico is a sleek and compact seat roll (essentially a saddle bag) that attaches to you saddle seat rails and holds everything you need for your flat repairs.

This bag is good for road or trail, but Silca Seat Roll will have a hard time holding a mountain bike tube since Silca claims it holds tubes up to a 700×45 tube.

For road or gravel, the Silca Seat Roll is a good option for those looking for a saddle bag.

Why the Silca Seat Roll?

Cycling is all fun and games until someone gets a flat, even more so when it is you. What is worse when you are not prepared to fix your own flat.

And then there is always that one person in the group that depends on everyone to have stuff if something happens to them.

Do not be that person!

Pumps, saddle bags, multi-tool, and flat repair gear is the non-glamours side of cycling. The are accessories you need, and a lot of new riders may not realize it until they get their first flat tire or other mechanical.

A saddle bag or pump are not necessary per se, since there are alternative options for both (i.e., CO2 instead of pump and jersey pockets instead of saddle bag). A pump is a long-term reliable solution to fill your tires and a saddle bag stays on your bike, so you are always prepared for your ride.

If you have multiple bikes that you use regularly, a saddle bag could be a bit of a hassle switching from bike to bike. Buying multiple saddle bags could be a solution, but you would also need to buy other repair tools to fill those bags too.

Some people do not like the look of a saddle bag installed on the seat rails of a bike, so the Silca Seat Roll isn’t going to be for everyone. But, it is a good option for people who don’t want to stuff their flat repair items in their jerseys, and want a high quality seat pack that will hold your gear.

Learn from your past

Silca used 5 years of what they learned from making a previous version (Seat Roll Premio) to make a new and improved version, the Silca Seat Roll Asymmetrico. The improvements include:

  • Lighter materials
  • Reduced bulk
  • Improved abrasion resistance
  • Extra pocket
  • Asymmetric design to pack more into a smaller volume
  • Tube size up to 700×45 (29×1.75)

Unclip the Lace Guide from the BOA L6 closure system which includes a padded rail guard to protect your saddle rails. Un-Velcro the rubber extended Hypalon center panel used to secure and protect contents. Then unfold the Center pocket.

Inside you will find four dedicated internal pockets. The center one for a tube (designed for a 700×45 lightweight tube), far right pocket for a multi-tool, far left pocket for CO2 canisters and CO2 dispenser, and second pocket from left for a tire lever or two depending on size.

This bag was designed to fit Silca products which is understandable. When using a lightweight tube, the Silca Italian Army Knife Venti multi-tool, Premio Tire Levers, and EOLO IV CO2 regulator everything roles up nicely.

Using a regular 700×45 things start outa bit bulky, add in a different brand multi-tool and tire lever things get a little more complicated. The next go around I will try a smaller tube and smaller multi-tool with fewer tools. For gravel racing, I am okay with sacrificing a few tools for the weight savings.

While racing, in the event of a puncture, my initial remedy will be to use a tire plug and a CO2 cartridge.

This is a great little bag that securely mounts to your saddle rails. When properly loaded with flat repair items, the bag stays perfectly placed and doesn’t move around at all.

Though this is a great bag, that is well made, and made from high quality materials, it isn’t perfect, and it isn’t perfect for every situation.

This bag is great for group or solo training rides when if you get a flat, you aren’t super rushed to fix it. Though the bag is easy to remove, it isn’t necessarily the fastest or the most efficient when every second counts.

Most of the time, when racing, you probably aren’t using a saddle bag anyways. I will just carry repair items in my jersey pockets so I can access them quickly. But this method sacrifices comfort for speed.

One other thing I have noticed when using the Silca Seat Roll, is if the bag isn’t fully loaded, the bag doesn’t stay in place and slides down from the strap even though it is tightly secured. This happens because the BOA lace isn’t centered on the bag, and it allows it to slide out of the loop.

The bag still stays attached to the saddle rails, but it dangles down. I haven’t lost any tools, and the stays closed when this happened. To prevent this, it is important to keep the Silca Seat Roll full as much as possible to keep it from sliding down while riding.

When the bag is fully loaded, the strap is more centered around the Silca Seat Roll and when it is strapped down it stays completely in place.

Final Thoughts

There are many different types of bags available nowadays to store your essential flat repair items, and personally, I have found saddle bags to be one of the most ideal ways to carry them on the bike. Saddle bags are great because they are out of the way behind you, unlike a handlebar bag, frame bag, or a top tube bag.

The Silca Seat Roll isn’t your typical saddle. It is fabric roll with pouches inside that allows you full access to all the items inside, unlike a typical saddle that can be a bottomless bit that items get lost in.

Silca Seat Roll might not be for everyone, but it is a great option for someone considering a new saddle bag. Check out Silca’s pack collections for this pouch and a few of their other style of bags.
