Unboxing

The Outdoor Master HAWK III Polarized Sunglasses come in a plastic bag when shipped. Inside the plastic bag you will find a hardcase that is good for storing the glasses when they aren’t in use. The case will help prevent the sunglasses from getting crushed when they are stowed away in a bag.

Inside the hardcase, are the Hawk III sunglasses that come wrapped in plastic and one arm comes wrapped in plastic too. Inside is a small baggie that contains a manual, a polarized lens tester, a microfiber cloth for cleaning, and a neck leash/lanyard.

Cycling Sunglasses and More

Though my test of these glasses is mainly for cycling. Don’t hesitate to use them for other things. If you install the leash, they work good for kayaking/boating. These can also be used for running or just day-to-day activities.

Features
  • 100% UV400 Protection – The Hawk III sunglasses shield your eyes from harmful UV rays
  • Impact Resistance – the lenses offer protection from flying objects according to Outdoor Master. Though these aren’t Z87 rated glasses and should not be used in lieu of safety glasses.
  • Memory frames – memory frame technology so they adjust to your face and head to provide a more comfortable experience.
  • Tac Lens – provides true HD vision for shaper clarity and vibrant colors.
  • Adjustable arm lengths to provide a better fit.
Initial Thoughts

The Hawk III sunglasses are very light. These are one of the lightest sunglasses I have reviewed. They are advertised at 30 g, but the set I got are only 23 g. The frames and arms are extremely flexible, so they won’t put a lot of pressure on your head. This will mean more comfort on long rides.

The Hawk III sunglasses come in 6 different colors but do pick the glasses based only on the lens color. Each color is meant for different outside conditions. Unfortunately, this isn’t well spelled out on the website, but in the provided manual you can see the differences between the lens options.

Unfortunately, if you were hoping to have glasses with interchangeable lenses, these aren’t them. It seems standard now that most glasses come interchangeable, with the spare lens being clear or lowlight lens. The Hawk III glasses are fixed lens in that the don’t come with a spare.

All Conditions Riding

The Outdoor Master Hawk III sunglasses being reviewed are the red lenses which are meant for bright conditions when road riding. The blue lens glasses which are good for light conditions that are changing but not very bright conditions. And the Polycarbonate gray, which are good  for bright conditions but adapt to low light conditions too.

Final Thoughts

The Hawk III sunglasses are currently $39.99, but Outdoor Master will usually have some sales. Use the code Jay15 for a discount.

The saying is, and I am loosely quoting here, you can’t be sure of anything except death and taxes. But I would add to that saying it should be death, taxes, and losing a pair of sunglasses. Also, there are two kinds of people in this world, people who have lost a pair of sunglasses and people who will lose a pair. So, if the inevitable is going to happen, and losing a pair of $40 glasses is better than a $100+ pair of glasses.

I am slightly being a little facetious and losing a pair of glasses shouldn’t justify purchasing a pair of glasses if they are inferior in some sort of way. These glasses do what an expensive pair of glasses can do there is no doubt about that.

Unfortunately, I haven’t had these long enough, months or years, to judge the long-term durability of the lens or frames. So, I can’t honestly make any claims on that aspect.

In a few months’ time, I will update this section to judge that aspect.

As noted above the, the frames aren’t very stiff. In fact, the extending part of the arms are very flexible (watch the featured video above on my YouTube channel). This might be good if you are sensitive to pressure on your head, but honestly, they feel a bit cheap. I think they should have been made a bit stiffer.

Also, I find that the frames are quite flexible too.

I haven’t had any issues with these glasses or the glasses coming off while riding. Even riding bumpy gravel roads and looking downwards the Outdoor Master Hawk III sunglasses stayed on my head. But if you shake your head hard the glasses could slide off.

Besides the frames being a little too flexible, the lenses are good. They block the sun well and serve as good eye protection from bugs and dust when riding.

Outdoor Master Hawk 3 sunglasses

There is a wide variety of lens colors and light transmissibility needs, Outdoor Master has you covered. Though you need to be careful when choosing your glasses just based on the lens face color. Each lens has a different light transmission percentage.

Unfortunately, this isn’t clearly stated on the Hawk III page, but on a pamphlet included with the glasses.

For the price of these glasses, you get good eye protecting, but I feel like the frames are a bit of a letdown. I prefer a single piece arm and is a bit stiffer. If you really need arms that extend out because you have had trouble in the past with sunglasses fitting properly these might be a good fit for you. Otherwise, I would recommend something like the Hawk HD sunglasses that I have reviewed on my YouTube Channel.
