Day 4 – Lake Bled Slovenia: Epic Hikes, Iconic Lakes, and Thrilling Drives to Bovec

Day 4 – Lake Bled Slovenia: Epic Hikes, Iconic Lakes, and Thrilling Drives to Bovec

Lake Bled Slovenia

We woke up refreshed after a good night of sleep, even with all the festivities going on last night. We made our way to the Avsenik house and had another great breakfast—a usual mix of meats, bread, jelly, eggs, and juice. From there, we were ready to begin exploring.

Grad Kamen

We drove to a castle, Grad Kamen, that was just down the street, tucked away in the valley. The castle was mentioned as early as the 1100s and was strategically located along a mountain pass to Carinthia. It was abandoned in the 1800s and then not restored until the late 1900s. The curved brick ceilings and rock work were very impressive.

Završnica Hiking

We then drove to a local hiking spot, Završnica. Thankfully, our server at the Avsenik house recommended this trail to us. It was quite an intense climb, but it was more than worth it. There, we hiked about 3 hours, up and then down. We found a beautiful overlook that gave us a glimpse of Lake Bled and Bled Castle.

Lake Bled

We then drove to Lake Bled and struggled to get the parking app to cooperate, so we just decided to drive along the lake. We were hoping to walk around and explore some, but it was very crowded. It was like Disney—tourist buses were passing us, people filled the sidewalks, and the boats were expensive.

We were determined to get a good picture and see the famous island church. It was beautiful, but on a cloudy day, the water didn’t look as stunning as in the pictures. It would be something to do either really early or outside of the tourist season to really enjoy it.

Lake Bohinj

Determined to get a good lake experience, we continued on to Lake Bohinj. It didn’t have as much of a Disney vibe but was still busy. It did seem like a great place for a bike ride along the lake. The water was beautiful! We stopped by a little beach to enjoy the view.

Off to Bovec

After the lake visits, we ascended the mountain pass to get over to Bovec. It was a wild ride on a narrow road with buildings’ edges practically in the road and hairpin turns. It was popular among motorcyclists. Jason did a great job getting around with the manual car.

We then drove along the Soča River to get to our glamping site. The owner, Monika, indulged me by letting me share about the family history trip. Once I said “Dober dan,” she continued in Slovene, but then we had to explain that we didn’t speak the language (Oprostite, ne razumem—excuse me, I don’t understand).

She thought that maybe we did know Slovene also because of my last name. We then walked to dinner and had roasted pork and grilled calamari. Yum! We were hungry and tired after another full day.

For Tomorrow

We are spending two nights at our glamping spot, so no driving tomorrow. We have e-bikes rented for the day and plan to explore the Soča Valley. Hopefully, we can find some hidden treasures along the way. Until then, keep exploring.
