We measured over a hundred of the most popular bike helmets, by brands like Smith, Bell, Giro, 100%, Specialized, POC, Thousand, Bern, Kask, Bontrager, and Sweet Protection. The Punks are designed to fit almost any open face helmet on the market.
We chose a driver that provided the best clarity and bass response possible in a small package.
- The 22 x 14mm oval design of the speaker provides high sensitivity which increases volume without zapping battery power.
- The driver has more diaphragm surface area producing additional bass to counter the limitations inherent to the open face helmet use case.
- Rectangular speakers buckle at the corners causing distortion. The Punks oval speaker design reduces distortion, and increases clarity at higher excursion.
- Finally, we angled the speaker slightly inside the enclosure to give it more directional power to deliver full frequency clarity to the user’s ear with more precision.
Aleck group wireless comms runs over cell networks and it has no range limitations like radio based systems. Whether you are in an open channel “Party” or “Push-to”talk”, both are designed to work with minimal cell signal, and if you lose signal, it is self-healing, so you are automatically added back to the chat.
Most of us are already carrying our phones, so there is a weight and bulk advantage over radio based systems.
Blocks the wind so you can be heard.
Engineering a small, lightweight wireless comms device that could handle intense wind noise was challenging. Our engineers developed three layers of wind noise reduction: 1) mechanical, 2) secondary mic environmental noise cancellation, and the crucial final layer 3) a cloud-based noise reduction algorithm.

- Layer 1 – Specialized mic with 3 mechanical barriers; wind screen, tube offset & open cell foam
- Layer 2 – Secondary mic for ENC (environmental noise cancellation)
- Layer 3 – Cloud based software NR (noise reduction)
They are rugged.
Coming in at a miniscule 5.7 x 2.7 x 1 cm (2.25 x 1x 0.5 in) and only 16 grams each, you will forget the Punks are there.

There are so many open face helmets used in a variety of sports. The Punks are the ideal companion when you’re out doing what you love, or trying a new kind of ride.
Your group sometimes changes every time you go out, so we made the Group Management as easy as pie. The Friend Finder is a handy tool to reconnect because we all know that one guy (who shall remain nameless) who ALWAYS takes a wrong turn.
And finally, for the audiophiles here, we built in an Audio Lab that allows you to dial in your signature sound.
Joining a group is easy too… Easily add companions with a quick QR code scan or if they are not near, a text message / DM works too.
Wearing any helmet, you are probably used to bouncing around a bit. That’s not great for random ear buds and pods. We focused intently on making sure these Punks wireless comms were easy to install, but hard to slip.
We found all of the available audio solutions out there were insufficient in either audio quality, maintaining awareness, or weight/size.
On the communications side, we found that radio based systems had a glaring connection weakness when obstacles like buildings, mountains or even trees were present.
We’re in the late stages of development right now and plan to go to production shipping out of factory in June. Our team is really excited about this Kickstarter wireless comms opportunity to create a sizeable community of enthusiastic users right out of the gate.
Over two years in the making, we started with a concept, and then went out and spoke to cyclists across the globe. We found some surprising statistics… In our research we found that 64% of cyclists listen to music when they ride, 76% of them said “Communication is important”, but also 71% reported that “Communication is Not Easy” or “Difficult”. Anyone who rides in groups can concur.
Our team then got to work making a wireless comms device that met these two clear needs:
1) Fantastic audio experience, emphasizing environmental awareness, and…
2) Easy group communication
After many many many iterations, we landed on a design that could be easily mounted to the straps of any open face helmet, drives quality audio and allows for clear communication even in windy/noisy environments.
